Reasons I switched to Gentoo from another distro
- A community effort as opposed to a corporate product
- More choice of the packages installed on the system compared to what I'd used before
- Easy (and free) to keep up to date
- BSD ports-like software package distribution/management system
- Tons of software both stable and bleeding edge available in portage
- Support for a wide range of filesystems (reiser, xfs, jfs)
- Support for closed drivers like ATI and nVidia
- Great potential for optimization if I choose
- Great user community
The Reasons I continue to use Gentoo
- All of the above
- Great documentation
- It has taught me a ton about how Linux works
- It has become the best, most comfortable operating environment I've yet to use
What is Gentoo Linux?
